I will try to find someone with a recording of this talk, but I don't think it will be that valuable. Clearly, this brother added his personal comments. JWs will simply dismiss it as that...another individual brother that went too far.

Door-to-door salesmen are about to get the bum's rush from Coquitlam.
Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to ban door-to-door sales following complaints about the pushy sales tactics of some natural-gas marketers.
The bylaw when it is introduced in September will exclude charitable causes like Girl Guide cookie sales, political campaigners and religious organizations such as Jehovah's Witnesses.

"It's only meant to apply to commercial for-profit door-to-door sales," Coun. Richard Stewart said yesterday.
"Unfortunately it means a summer of seeing door-to-door sales of natural gas.
"I believe door-to-door discussions of religion are protected constitutionally. This [bylaw] wouldn't include them."
The bylaw means gas marketers "will have to do other techniques like telemarketing or direct mail to contact the customer," said Rob Pellet of the B.C. Utilities Commission.
The agency has logged more than 600 complaints about aggressive or misleading sales pitches by gas pedlars since May 1, when B.C. opened up the sale of residential gas to private companies.
Complaints have come in from all over B.C.
"A number of customers who talked to these natural-gas marketers believed they were only going to get more information, not a contract," said Pellet.
In other cases, marketers have misrepresented themselves or have promised to save the customer money.
The commission now requires all contracts to be verified by a third party, usually by the company's head office.
Since the new procedure took effect on July 1, complaints have decreased "slightly" but Pellet said he is still "kept very busy."
The Township of Langley requires door-to-door salesmen to have a permit, said Coun. Kim Richter.
No natural-gas marketers have applied for one.

the speaker first starts with what he called the "alphabet soup" of degrees....a.a., b.a., m.a., ph.d., etc.
; he said they were nothing more than "sheepskins on the wall.
His name is brother Lowe; he is serving as C.O. of Washington Circuit # 1. And yes, many others heard the comment, as several in our congregation have been disucussing it. BTW, pronounces his name Low...like it rhymes with cow.

justitia themis had a topic 'disgusting comment re: education from tacoma 2007 district convention' regarding a talk on education that those pursuing degrees would be d.e.a.d.
unfortunately that stupid comment was not made at the dc i attended, but i am providing the audio to let ones know how far the society is going in discouraging ones from pursuing college by using weak and tired arguments.. http://www.box.net/shared/s523re4c7i.
this scare tactic clearly demonstrates that they really don't have great faith in "jehovah" and their kids, to think that they can't go to college and avoid all the negatives of college life. No one's forcing kids to go get drunk every weekend
The "brother" who gave our talk said that 44% of college students binge drink. I did a fact check, and there are some variations between studies, but that number is about right. However, as I posted on a another thread, that still means that 56% of the students are NOT binge drinking. So, JW young people lack the ability to go WITH the crowd and not binge drink? Apparently, we do not think much of our children.

What is the name of the "Brother" who gave this talk?
I want his name. Seriously, can someone provide it?
Lau, Lowl? Circuit Overseer for Washington Circuit #1.
Anyone know him?

i would like to hear it, can anyone tell me which day and time it was given?
the convention is in town this weekend (as well as last weekend and next weekend) and i need information on the talk.. i am going to visit my family next week and i want to try to talk to my niece about college.
She said she already heard it at her convention in Dekalb, Illinois - so either it was the same speaker or someone who copied off him or it was in the outline.
Unreal! The speaker at our convention is currently serving as a CO for Washington Circuit #1. His last name is Lau, Lowl, or something like that. Perhaps you wife has this info in her notes? Then we could verify if it the same individual.

It's a Saturday afternoon talk. I too do not believe this is in the outline. Several other posters have written about assemblies in their areas, and they do not mention this statement.

What was the name of the talk?
The Superiority of Being Taught By Jehovah.
Several times he emphasized that "higher" education is ANYTHING past the 12 years of legally required education. The reasons he outlined for avoiding education were as follows:
1) The high cost; it takes years to pay back the loans.
2) Once you start working, you are expected to devote many hours to your career.
3) You are exposed to corrupting influences and a corrupting environment [as opposed to the morally uplifting influences and environment of the trades.]. He specifically referenced binge drinking and said that "a study" showed that 44% of college students binge drink. I did a fact check, and that is about right. However, that also means that 56%, OR THE MAJORITY of college students, are NOT binge drinking. It is a sad commentary about our youth if we feel them so morally bereft and spineless that they will not be able to go ALONG with the crowd and refrain from binge drinking. If they can not go WITH the crowd for good purposes, what hope do we have that they will go AGAINST the crowd's bad purposes?
Additionally, the percentage of college binge drinkers usually mimicks binge drinking among the general population in any given State. So working or going to school places one in the same alcohol environment.
These reasons were all that were presented, at least all that I have in my notes. Sounds like a pretty weak case to me.
